Brazen Beau got a feel of Newmarket’s July Course with a public gallop on Tuesday morning when he teamed up with his new jockey, James Doyle, ahead of the Group 1 Darley July Cup on Saturday 11 July.

Now owned by Godolphin but still trained by Sydney-based Chris Waller, Brazen Beau looked a picture of health just ten days after he finished a close second in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Working on the same stretch of turf that will be used for the Darley July Cup’s 135th renewal, he impressed his connections with the way that he handled the course’s undulations.

Brazen Beau’s new jockey James Doyle said after the spin: “He gave me the feel of exactly what he is: a top class sprinter and a seriously fast horse. He felt great.

“We went six furlongs and he changed his legs in all the right places. He didn’t do anything strenuous, I just let him quicken up over the last couple of furlongs.

“I can’t wait for the Darley July Cup and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race, although I have the utmost respect for Muhaarar, who put up a freakish performance in winning the Commonwealth Cup.”

Chris Waller’s Travelling Head Lass, Johanne Taylor, was equally buoyant following the gallop, saying: “Brazen Beau went very well and we were extremely pleased with his work.

“We didn’t ask him too much, we just wanted him to get a look at the course and familiarise himself with its undulations.

“James [Doyle] was sitting on him for the first time and came back and said that he did everything right, handling the course very well.”

“Brazen Beau has tightened up a bit since Ascot. He lost a bit of weight but not anything to be concerned about and he has put it all back on. I even think that he has come on for that run – we thought that we had him spot on there but he impressed me with the way that he came through it. He is the type of horse who steps up to any task that you put before him.

“We hope to work him on the course again early next week and Chris [Waller] will be here by then.”
