Bolger has Turret Rocks in prime shape for Oaks

Jim Bolger believes Turret Rocks is ready to roll in her attempt to help him belatedly gain a second Investec Oaks triumph at Epsom on Friday week.

Bolger won the fillies’ Classic with 50-1 chance Jet Ski Lady 25 years ago but his six challengers since then have finished no closer than third. And he has not had a runner in it since the QIPCO British Champions Series was launched in 2011.

Turret Rocks, winner of the May Hill Stakes last year, looks certain to improve for stepping up in distance and her trainer says she will strip much fitter than when sixth to Minding in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas on her return, when she was beaten six and a half lengths.

“I have to put my hands up and admit I left her a bit short for Newmarket, but that race will have set her up nicely and I couldn’t be be happier with her,” Bolger said.

“She’s fit and well, and won’t do much between now and the race. My gallops are very stiff and so by the time they get to the top each morning, they’ve probably done plenty.”

Bolger has has enjoyed three QIPCO British Champions Series winners in the past – including two with Dawn Approach in 2013 – and will also saddle Moonlight Magic in the Investec Derby 24 hours after the Oaks is run.

The Godolphin-owned colt won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on his latest start and his 74-year-old trainer has been pleased with his subsequent progress.

“I wouldn’t swap him for anything in the race,” said Bolger, who won the 2008 Derby with New Approach. “He has the looks, demeanour, balance, temperament to go with his pedigree and there are no holes in this fella. He is a beautifully balanced horse so hopefully he will handle Epsom well.”
