Hayley Turner, Britain’s best ever female jockey, registered her second consecutive victory in the QIPCO British Champions Series Sprint division at York this afternoon.
She followed up her famous Darley July Cup win on Dream Ahead with a fantastic triumph on Margot Did in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.
As a result, she joins Tom Queally (5 wins), Frankie Dettori (4), Richard Hughes (2) and William Buick (2) as the only jockeys to have won more than one QIPCO British Champions Series race, while it was a first Series win for trainer Michael Bell.
Margot Did was a promising two-year-old last season racing exclusively over the distance of six furlongs.
The making of her, however, has been the drop back to five furlongs this year and this was her third victory over that trip from five attempts and easily her biggest success to date.
Always prominent towards the stands side, she was travelling supremely well and quickened smartly when asked to lead inside the final furlong to score a decisive three-quarter length success from Hamish McGonagall.
Prohibit proved himself the most consistent sprinter in the Series to date, following up his third place in the betfred.com Temple Stakes and his victory in the King’s Stand Stakes with another third place, half a length behind the second horse.
The hot favourite, Hoof It, finished sixth, appearing to find the five furling trip too sharp for him.
"I’m overwhelmed," declared a thrilled HayleyTurner.
"I can’t believe it, it’s the best season ever.
"It just goes to show if you work hard and are dedicated it can be done.”
Of her winning mount, she said: "I thought maybe a Group One would be stretching her ability-wise, but obviously not.
"She’s always been special to me, but I’ve only really just figured how to get the best out of her.
"She loves plenty of daylight. She has one gear for the end and you have to save it for as long as you can.
"The longer you can wait on her, the better."
