Can Poet find his Voice?

Tomorrow’s Nayef Joel Stakes is the last QIPCO British Champions Series race before the spectacular finale on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday 15 October when the final five races, one from each category, will be run on Britain’s richest ever raceday.

It is the sixth race in the Mile category, leaving just the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO to come, a race which Poet’s Voice, one of seven runners in tomorrow’s race, won last year.

Since that victory, Poet’s Voice has failed to win in four starts, but hopes will be high that he can bounce back to form tomorrow and justify a return trip to Ascot in just over three weeks’ time to defend his Queen Elizabeth II Stakes crown against the mighty Frankel.

Victory or second place for Poet’s Voice tomorrow would take Frankie Dettori past Tom Queally, who is without a ride in the race, to the top of the Jockey of the Series leaderboard.

The main opposition is likely to come from Premio Loco, third to Canford Cliffs in the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May and a winner at Doncaster earlier this month, and Tazahum, who was a good second to Green Destiny at York last month.

Then the countdown will be well and truly on for QIPCO British Champions Day, with recent news including the possibility that the Stobart Doncaster Cup winner, Saddlers Rock, may be supplemented for the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup and that the Andrew Balding-trained Side Glance will run in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
