Ransom Note, who holds an entry for the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday 15 October, won the final QIPCO British Champions Series race prior to QIPCO British Champions Day, the Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket on Friday.

It was a first Series victory for trainer Charlie Hills and his brother, Michael, in the saddle. He made all on the colt to win the sixth race in the Mile division by two-and-a-quarter lengths.

Premio Loco, third to Canford Cliffs in the JLT Lockinge Stakes in May, finished second, with Poet’s Voice a never nearer third.

That third place was not quite enough to take Frankie Dettori past Tom Queally at the top of the Jockey of the Series leaderboard.

Both have five victories to their name, but Queally edges it with three second places to Frankie’s two.

“He is in the QIPCO Champion Stakes and could run there as he gets the trip well," said Charlie Hills afterwards, while Michael added: “He picked up and picked up and stayed on all the way to the line. I knew it would take a good one to catch him.”

Now its all systems go to QIPCO British Champions Day three weeks today when the stars of the season, headed by the unbeaten Frankel, will descend on Ascot for the richest day in British racing history.
