Dermot Weld’s QIPCO British Champions Day champion Forgotten Rules stars among the 19 entries for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot next Thursday.
The five-year-old, who was a convincing winner of last year’s QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup, faces a stiff task to record more Ascot success, with a battalion of champions including Michael Owen’s Brown Panther, recent Sandown Park winner Vent De Force and previous runner-up Simenon amongst the contenders.
The leading Group 1 stayers’ race, which was won in 2013 by Her Majesty The Queen with Estimate, also features the progressive Clever Cookie and Trip To Paris, Aidan O’Brien’s Kingfisher and Luca Cumani’s Mizzou.
The German-trained Alex My Boy is also a serious challenger for Gold Cup glory in what looks likely to be a mouth-watering battle.
