It was a familiar story in the 2021 QIPCO 1000 Guineas as Aidan O’Brien secured his fifth win in the last six renewals. The stable second string, Mother Earth was too good under a masterclass Frankie Dettori ride.
Coming into the race all the talk was around Santa Barbara. The filly had received large amounts of betting market support in the build-up. However, it was Aidan’s supposed less-fancied runner Mother Earth who came home best on the Rowley Mile.

Racing mid-division for much of the race, pilot Frankie Dettori made a decisive move on the far side and broke cover. Mother Earth responded to her jockey’s urgings. She duly obliged by breezing past stablemate Santa Barbara going inside the final furlong.
For a brief moment, the race looked wide-open in the final stages. However, when Mother Earth hit the front she never looked like being caught, despite fast finishes from Saffron Beach and Fev Rover.
The result gave evergreen Frankie Dettori his 4th QIPCO 1000 Guineas at 50 years of age. He first won the race back in 1998 on Cape Verdi. For trainer Aidan O’Brien it was his 7th win in the race and fifth in the last six years.
The Classic train now rolls on to Epsom for the Cazoo Derby and Oaks. The Dettori masterclass in the 2021 QIPCO 1000 Guineas won’t be easily forgotten though.
