Ruling the Turf: Appleby and Buick Make Classic History at Newmarket

The 2025 Guineas Festival at Newmarket turned into a royal procession for Godolphin, as trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick swept both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas in commanding fashion with Ruling Court and Desert Flower, marking an unforgettable weekend for the powerhouse team.

Saturday’s Betfred 2000 Guineas saw Ruling Court confirm his elite credentials in a pulsating finish. The €2.3 million Justify colt had already hinted at greatness with a win in the UAE 2000 Guineas, but it was his Newmarket triumph that truly announced his arrival. Settled just off the pace, Ruling Court surged past stablemate Shadow Of Light in the final furlong and withstood the late charge of favourite Field Of Gold, securing victory by half a length.

He’s the real deal

Buick’s decision to partner Ruling Court over more experienced options proved prescient, while Appleby was quick to earmark the colt for the Derby, where he now heads the betting at 7-2. “He’s the real deal,” said Appleby. “A proper horse who’s done everything right.”

The momentum carried into Sunday, as Desert Flower bloomed brightest in the 1000 Guineas. Breaking smartly, the unbeaten filly dictated the pace and never looked back, repelling the challenge of outsider Flight to win decisively. It was Appleby’s first 1000 Guineas win, sealing a remarkable Classic double in just 24 hours.

“She’s the best filly we’ve had,” Appleby declared post-race. “She stays, she quickens, and she has the mind for it. We’ll have a serious look at the Oaks.”

With two Guineas trophies in the cabinet and both runners now leading the markets for Epsom’s showpiece races, Appleby and Buick have not only reaffirmed their dominance, they’ve raised the bar for the entire flat season.
