Any doubts about the surface beforehand were quickly put to bed when John Gosden’s star came swinging around the home turn as many of his rivals began to tire. The small but mighty chestnut and jockey Frankie Dettori had the race wrapped up with two furlongs left to run as he cruised upsides front-runner Nayef Road before powering clear with little fuss.
The result means that Stradivarius goes into an elite group of stayers who have won three Gold Cups; with just Sagaro and four-time winner Yeats for company.
Speaking to ITV Racing after the race Frankie Dettori said, “I was worried about the ground and he surprised me. It is still very soft but it shows what a fighter he is.”.
Speaking about the prospect of a record equalling fourth Gold Cup he said, “It’s all about Stradivarius next year.”
