Galileo Chrome lands Leger thriller at Doncaster

The Pertemps St Leger served up one of the best races of the year as Galileo Chrome snatched victory on Town Moor.

For rising weighing room star Tom Marquand it was his maiden British Classic at the age of 22, made even more special having only been given the ride the day before.
It was also special for Joseph O’Brien who became a winning trainer and jockey of the race.
Coming into the stretch at Doncaster, a line of six horses emerged setting up a pulsating finish. Pyledriver on the far side just looked ahead going through two furlongs out, with Hukum, Galileo Chrome, Berkshire Rocco and Santiago all prominent.
Pyledriver then began to stray off a true line going into the final furlong and it was left to Galileo Chrome, Berkshire Rocco and Santiago to battle it out. It was then that Galileo Chrome hit the front under a strong drive from Marquand. Berkshire Rocco however, was not for lying down as the pair fought out a pulsating final 100 yards.
Galileo Chrome would not be denied though, always finding more in the finish to land the spoils.
To Pyledriver’s credit he stuck to the task and got up late for third ahead of Santiago.
