Coroebus continues fine form in St James’s Palace

Coroebus St James's Palace

For any person wondering if Coroebus‘ win in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas was a fluke, wonder no more as he followed up in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot. Following in the steps of many before him, including the might Frankel, he ground out a highly competitve renewal to take his second win of the season, second Group 1 and second QIPCO British Champions Series race.

His win in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas showed his class. His stablemate, Native Trail, was much the fancied of the two horses and those two dre clear with Coroebus the clear winner. Today, however, was a different kind of win. A win that champions produce when they need it most.

He didn’t have his stablemate to contend with today, but he did have two very competitive rivals from Wiliam Haggas’ yard who had already tasted Group 1 success on the day.

William Buick took the ride as Godolphin first choice rider, and he had Coroebus handy throughout the one mile contest. Turning for home the race unfolded and Coreobus was asked for more by his jockey. There were plenty of rivals to fend off.

The lead switched hands many times in the closing stages and a blanket could have been thrown over the first five of Coroebus, Lusail, My Prospero, Maljoom and Mighty Ulysees. On the line it was hard to call, but on closer inspection the Group 1 form told through and Coreobus had just clung on. a determined win from a determined horse.

There were some big performances from My Prospero, Lusail and the unlucky Maljoom as well showing that there is depth in quality in the mile division this year.

The obvious next step in the UK would be the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood which could see a mighty showdown with the unbeaten Baaeed…it might be time to get your tickets sorted…
