Eldar Eldarov gave jockey David Egan a first British Classic when winning the Cazoo St Leger Stakes on a memorable day at Doncaster on Sunday.
The pair travelled well throughout the race, passing the favourite’s New London and Haskoy in the final two furlongs. Showing an impressive turn of foot Eldar Eldarov stretched his lead from the pack to win by half a length.

Trained by Roger Varian, the 3-year old son of Dubawi showed his class after winning well at Royal Ascot earlier this year in the Queen’s Vase. However, this would be the colts first group 1 win.
“To win a Classic at 23… I never thought I’d do it, but when you’re riding for such a big stable it can happen. When you see Her Majesty has won this race and to think that I’ve done something so similar – I’m just in awe really, it’s all a bit of a blur.”
After an emotional weekend for everyone the 23 year old Jockey was gobsmacked to win this special race. “To win a Classic at 23… I never thought I’d do it, but when you’re riding for such a big stable it can happen. When you see Her Majesty has won this race and to think that I’ve done something so similar – I’m just in awe really, it’s all a bit of a blur.”
‘This ones for you Jack.’ David Egan dedicated the win to Jack De Bromhead after he sadly passed away in a fatal racing accident last weekend.
Second past he post was Haskoy, ridden by Frankie Dettori. A superb run from the filly being her 3rd ever time on the race track. However, she was penalized by the stewards after interference with fourth placed horse Giavellotto two furlongs from the winning post. Haskoy’s position was demoted to fourth with New London promoted to second and Giavellotto in third.
The St Leger is British horse racing’s oldest and final classic race of the British flat racing season.
