The Milan-born superstar has been exciting fans for more than three decades, winning has won over 3,200 UK career wins, with plenty more around the world. His ever bulging CV includes more than 500 Group-race triumphs. Dettori has won all UK Group 1s, bar the July Cup, a race he will surely be targeting in his final year.

His charisma both on and off the track has elevated him to be perhaps the most famous jockey in the world.

Magnificent Seven

Saturday 28th September 1996 – a day that changed Dettori’s life, a day that to remember for all racing fans and a day that will be live long in the memory.

When arriving at Ascot racecourse, you’d forgive Dettori for not thinking he’d be leaving after reaping all seven winners on the card. His near-impossible feat of winning all seven races on the day, including the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, propelled the jockey to stardom.

The BBC interrupted its traditional Grandstand coverage to broadcast the live action from Ascot as bookies slashed the odds for Dettori’s final mount, Fujiyama Crest. The cumulative odds of all seven wins was 25,051-1.

Crucial partnerships

Dettori spent 18 incredible years with global ownership, before going freelance in 2012. Just three years later, the Italian announced a return to John Gosden, for whom he had ridden for earlier in his career. He provided Dettori with his second Derby winner just three months into their partnership, aboard Golden Horn, seven years after registering his first aboard Authorized (2007).

In more recent history, the Dettori/Gosden partnership has flourished with some of the modern day greats being produced from the Clarehaven Stables. Dettori’s love affair with mare, Enable, was one of the popular partnerships in racing. Fans will hold fond memories of the talented Enable, who retired having won an astonishing 11 Group 1s, including a hat-trick of King George’s and two Arc’s – Dettori was on board for 17 of her 19 runs.

Another Gosden great, Stradivarius, gave Dettori several days in the sun. The superstar-stayer hauled 20 wins of his 35 starts and reaped over £3.5m of prize money. Once again, Dettori was on board for the majority of his victories and will have fond memories of his partnership with the Bjorn Nielsen-owned horse, having won three successive Gold Cup’s at Ascot.

Stradivarius is the winning-most horse in the QIPCO British Champions Series, having registered an astonishing 16 victories.

What next?

As Dettori takes aim at adding to his wealthy CV, he will as ever be aboard some of the best horses in training. He’ll take aim at a third Epsom Derby, likely aboard Gosden-trained Slipofthepen in the Royal colours. He can also look forward to Classic tilts aboard Group 1-winning juveniles Chaldean and Commissioning who sparkled in 2022.
