Tahiyra Gives Weld A Second Coronation Stakes In 45 Years

Dermot Weld has won his second Coronation Stakes with fine filly, Tahiyra. The Aga Khan-owned filly oozed class to take the Group 1 feature on Day Four of the Royal meeting, giving jockey Chris Haynes a first winner at the Royal meeting.

Weld’s first victory in the race came some 45 years ago back in 1978, with Sutton Place.

This years renewal was a scrappy one as the field jostled out the gates, but Tahiyra and Hayes justified favouritism and pressed on well out of the turn to soon head the field in full control. Rob Hornby pulled his mount, Remarquee, out for a late charge but it was too little too late as Tahiyra hit the line.

A stewards’ inquiring was announced after the race, but the placings remained unaltered.

Winning jockey, Chris Hayes said: “She was running keen early and I had to get her to relax. It was a slow pace, and she did well. She was running at a quickening pace, and I can’t wait to ride her in a properly run mile. Then you’ll see what she is all about.”

Weld said: “I thought it was an excellent performance from Tahiyra. She was a worthy winner. It was always going to be tactical in such a small field, and she was very brave.

“She’s a very talented filly, and I think she’ll be given a nice break now. She had a busy spring. We’ll bring her back for an autumn programme and we’ll definitely consider stepping her up in trip.”
