Poptronic caused a big surprise to win the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes under Sam James, in what was the jockey’s first career Group 1 winner.
The Karl Burke-trained four-year-old had finished well down the field in her previous two runs, but showed a very gutsy attitude to hold off late challenges from Bluestocking and Jackie Oh.

Speaking to ITV Racing immediately post-race jockey James commented: “She was very tough. We weren’t sure whether she’d like the ground but she always gallops. She was a bit keen for the first furlong but I got her settled in front and got a few breathers into her coming up the hill and, to be fair to her, I knew coming past the three we’d have a good chance.
“It didn’t go right for her the last day in France, she got a bit hot, so it’s a great training performance from Karl to bring her back. She’s not the easiest and Kelly does a great job and rides her every day. A lot of credit goes to her.
“I’d like to thank Karl and the owners for leaving me on her. They could’ve used anyone but it really means a lot to me to get a Group 1 winner and I really appreciate it.”
