On a day many saw as City Of Troy’s crowning moment, William Buick and Charlie Appleby dashed their hopes as Notable Speech stretched his winning streak to four with a dominant performance to win the QIPCO 2000 Guineas.
The odds-on-favourite City Of Troy was always prominent in the hands of Ryan Moore, but when asked a question to go on, his hopes of victory soon faded. Notable Speech broke well and settle in midfield before quickening smoothly to the front. Richard Hannon’s, Rosallion, also drew clear of the field but it was the famous blue colours that previalled.

He does things so easily, his change of gear is incredible
Hannon will be pleased with Rosallion’s performance, finishing one-and-a-half lengths behind the winner, with stablemate Haatem back in third. It was a first turf start for the winner, who’s previous three wins all coming on the All Weather since the turn of the year.
It was a first QIPCO 2000 Guineas for William Buick, who said: “I’ve not known him for that long, I came back from Dubai and here we are. I’ve not very often believed in a horse as much as I have this guy. I’ve had that much belief in him that sometimes you go home at night and you think ‘have I lost the plot altogether?’ because that’s how he does things. He does things so easily, his change of gear is incredible.”
Appleby now has two victories in the race (Coroebus 2022) and said: “We’ve given him all the time, he needed the time just to be a racehorse. As always, I’m in a very privileged position to be allowed to give the horses the time they need with no pressure so he had that time and came out on the all-weather and we all know what he did, he was three from three.”
Question’s will be asked as to where City Of Troy goes next, but you can certainly never write off Team Ballydoyle.
