Ryan Moore Masterclass sees Luxembourg win the Coronation Cup

Luxembourg wins the Coronation Cup

Luxembourg showed his class under a fabulous front-running ride from Ryan Moore to win the Holland Cooper Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Having grabbed the lead immediately out of the gates Moore was in prime position to control the pace and set a steady initial tempo.

Kieran Shoemark, riding the favourite and last year’s winner Emily Upjohn, made an effort to get closer as the leader rounded Tattenham Corner, but as they swung into the straight Moore set sail for home on the leader.

As the pace quickened Emily Upjohn’s challenge petered out quickly and only eight-year-old Hamish was able to sustain a meaningful challenge. Despite a brave late run he and Tom Marquand could not quite get to the leader went down by a length.

Speaking to ITV Racing, winning rider Moore commented: “He’s been a great horse.Things didn’t work out for him in the Middle East, he ran well the first day and the second day was a mess, but he’s been a very consistent horse his whole life and has now been a Group 1 winner at two, three, four and five. Not many horses can do that.

“He’s a straightforward, honest horse. This was his first Group 1 at a mile and a half and I always thought that would suit him, so I’m delighted he’s won today and the team have done a good job to bring him back to win.”
