Champions Series Dark Horses for 2018: Wells Farhh Go

In the first of a new weekly series, we look beyond the obvious at horses who might shine in this year’s Champions Series, starting with an unbeaten colt trained in Yorkshire.

Horse: WELLS FARHH GO

Form: 11. Trainer: Tim Easterby.

Tim Easterby enjoyed glory in the William Hill St Leger with Bollin Eric in 2002 and might have another candidate for the Classics this season in the shape of Wells Farhh Go.

A tall son of the high-class Farhh, Wells Farhh Go changed hands for €16,000 as a foal and 16,000gns as a yearling, but apparently his owners rejected much bigger sums for him after he had won a ten-runner minor event on his debut over seven furlongs at York in July by 2¼ lengths from Laugh A Minute, who would subsequently go onto land a valuable sales’ race at Doncaster.

Wells Farhh Go returned to York a month later for the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes and showed great resolution to pip James Garfield by a nose.

The pair pulled clear and the runner-up went on to land the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury in emphatic style.

Wells Farhh Go needed every inch of the seven furlongs of the Acomb to get on top and seems certain to relish a mile and more this year. His sire and dam were winners over a mile and a quarter.

Both this runs have been on rain-softened ground but there is no reason to think he will not be as effective on quicker terrain. He is 66-1 chance for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6 and is the same price for the Investec Derby at Epsom on June 3.
