Hydrogen being aimed at Derby tilt

Hydrogen, the most expensive yearling in 2012, could make his debut in April ahead of a possible tilt at the Investec Derby in June.

The three parts brother to 2007 Epsom Derby winner Authorized was sold to Qatar Racing Limited for 2.5 million Guineas and was set to make his debut at Newbury in October last year before scoping dirty.

Hydrogen’s trainer, Peter Chapple-Hyam, who trained Authorized to that Derby success, believes he will possibly run in a Newbury maiden on the West Berkshire-based track’s Greenham Stakes day before potentially tackling the Epsom Classic.

Chapple-Hyam told the Racing Post: “The Derby is a long way off but we could have him ready for the maiden at Newbury on trials day in April. We might then look at a Derby trial, but he’s a big baby who could come into his own later on.”

Hydrogen is a general 33/1 chance for the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday 7 June.
