Bragging rights over which colt deserves to be considered the best three-year-old of 2015 look set be decided at York Racecourse on Wednesday as Golden Horn and Gleneagles lock horns in the Juddmonte International over a mile and a quarter.

Golden Horn has been the most talked-about horse of the season, as brilliant victories under the ebullient Frankie Dettori in both the Investec Derby (over a mile and a half) and Coral-Eclipse (over a mile and a quarter) have seen him mentioned in the same breath as the very best horses of the 21st century.

But Gleneagles also boasts a perfect record this year, notching comfortable victories in three Group 1 mile events – the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The pair’s eight potential rivals in Wednesday’s £850,000 contest are Arabian Queen, Cougar Mountain, Criterion, Dick Doughtywylie, Mahsoob, The Corsican, The Grey Gatsby and Time Test.
