Godolphin have a tremendous squad of three-year-olds for 2017 and it will be a surprise if Boynton does not make an impact for them.

The imposing American-bred colt was a narrow winner on his debut over 6f at Goodwood in June and showed the benefit of that experience when edging out War Decree in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket a month later.

That was a cracking effort, with the pair pulling five lengths clear of the rest.

17 days later Boynton and War Decree met again but this time the result was different, with the latter winning decisively.

Boynton was beaten almost three lengths into third but it would be wrong to judge him too harshly because he was trying to concede 3lb and, for whatever reason, simply did not seem in the same form he had been in at Headquarters.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that he was not seen out again afterwards.

Having now had plenty of time to recuperate, it would come as no surprise if the good-looking chestnut resumed his progress.

He is a general 40-1 for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6, whereas War Decree, who he beat fair and square in their first battle, is no bigger than 16-1.
