Coronation Cup switched back to Friday slot by Epsom

Postponed streaks away from the field to win last year's Investec Coronation Cup

The Group One Investec Coronation Cup, part of the middle-distance category of the QIPCO British Champions Series, has been run on a Saturday since 2012. Last year it was won in brilliant fashion by the Roger Varian-trained Postponed.

It means it will now be back on the same card as the Investec Oaks, while the Group 3 Investec Diomed Stakes will be substituted to Derby day.

Andrew Cooper, head of racing and clerk of the course at Epsom Downs, said: “Between 1997 and 2011 the Investec Coronation Cup was run on the Friday, and was moved to the Saturday in 2012 as part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in that year.

“We believe the reversion of this historic Group One race to the Friday gives a significant boost to the race programme on that day, whilst the Investec Derby stands head and shoulders above all other races on the Saturday.”

This year’s Coronation Cup will take place on June 3.
