Series star George Baker recovering after heavy fall

George Baker was recovering in a Switzerland hospital on Sunday night after being placed in an induced coma following a heavy fall at St Moritz.

Baker, who won the St Leger in September on Harbour Law, was riding Boomerang Bob for Jamie Osborne on the frozen lake track when the horse was brought down and fatally injured in the first race of the day.

Three horses came down in the incident but the other two and both of their riders escaped injury.

The QIPCO British Champions Series star was airlifted to a trauma hospital in Chur but appears to have suffered no long-term injuries.

The 34-year-old’s agent, Guy Jewell, said: “George has woken up, and with the hospital releasing that news I can only imagine they are pleased with his progress. He’d already had a CT scan and that has come back clear.”

The 6ft jockey has ridden the winners of four Champions Series races and enjoyed a memorable autumn – guiding Harbour Law to a pulsating triumph in the Ladbrokes St Leger just weeks after landing the Lonsdale Cup at York on Quest For More.
