Mongan and Fellowes have Gold in their sights

Laura Mongan and Charlie Fellowes are excited at the prospect of each saddling their first runners in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on June 22.

Mongan reports that Harbour Law, winner of the Ladbrokes St Leger last year, is on course for the QIPCO British Champions Series showpiece, while Fellowes is keen to step Prince Of Arran up to the top table for the first time.

Harbour Law disappointed on his seasonal reappearance in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, but Mongan put that down to the two-mile race not being run to suit.

“He’s doing fine. We’re very happy with him at the moment. He’s spot on,” said Mongan. “All systems go for the Gold Cup. It’s exciting.”

Prince Of Arran turned in career-best display when second in the Sagaro Stakes.

“The plan is to go to Ascot for the Gold Cup,” Fellowes said. “He has got a bit to find on the ratings but he clearly acts around the track and the owners are keen to go.

“He was staying on in the Sagaro behind Sweet Selection. If he was falling in a heap at the end of two miles and that was his maximum I would be against it.

“He hit the line stronger than anything else in that race so why not give two and a half a crack?”

Fellowes added: “He is by Shirocco so there is plenty of stamina there and, at that trip, he is unexposed.”

Order Of St George, winner of the Gold Cup last year, is 5-4 with most firms to win back-to-back renewals. Harbour Law is 25-1, with Prince Of Arran 40-1.
