Solow nearing return with Royal Ascot “perfect” aim

Solow

Connections of Solow are hopeful the outstanding miler will be back in action before the end of May.

The Freddy Head-trained grey was one of the stars of the 2015 QIPCO British Champions Series when he won three races in the Mile category – the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the QIPCO-sponsored Queen Elizabeth II Stakes back at Ascot on Champions Day.

However, a leg injury restricted him to just one appearance last season, when he won a minor conditions event on the Polytrack at Chantilly in early March, and the now seven-year-old has not been seen since.

Pierre-Yves Bureau, racing manager for owners the Wertheimer brothers, said: “Solow has been in training since the middle of December and so far he has taken every step very well.

“Soon he will begin more serious work. We are very cautious as he was out of training for a long time, but at the moment we are very pleased and hopefully we will see him again in the coming months.

“The good thing about him being away for a year is we can find races for him and if everything goes well, I hope we will see him run in May.”

Asked whether a Royal Ascot return for the Queen Anne Stakes could be on Solow’s agenda, Bureau added: “That would be perfect, of course, and for sure it is some place in our minds, but time will tell.

“The horse will tell Freddy when he is ready.”
