Broome sweeps away Derby Trial opposition at Leopardstown

Aidan O’Brien’s hand in the Investec Derby at Epsom on June 1 just gets stronger and stronger.

Having won Wednesday’s Chester Vase with Sir Dragonet and the Dee Stakes at the Cheshire track 24 hours later with Circus Maximus, the Ballydoyle handler celebrated more Classic trial success over the weekend.

Anthony Van Dyck staked his claim with victory in the RaceBets Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield on Saturday, while Broome did his bit in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Supporters of the 2-5 favourite could have been forgiven to having a nervous moment or two rounding the bend, but the son of Australia made ominous progress from two out and was well on top with 100 yards to travel and ran out a smart two-and-a-half-length winner from stablemate Blenheim Palace.

O’Brien said: “We’re delighted. He’s lazy and that’s his way of racing. Donnacha (O’Brien) wanted to put him in there and race around tight on the rail. If he’s going to the Derby that’s what could happen to him.”

Meanwhile, in France, Persian King landed the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) at ParisLongchamp and Castle Lady maintained her 100 per cent record to give Godolphin a 300th top-level success with a convincing victory in the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.

The dual winner asserted in the closing stages to give trainer Alex Pantall and jockey Mickael Barzalona a first triumph in the French 1000 Guineas.

Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard told godolphin.com: “She is a very straightforward filly and we will sit down and discuss all options for her.

“However, it is probable that a mile will be her limit and therefore the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot could be her next race.”
